Project Description

👁 Idea

Make something about local identity of Amsterdam: City codes.

☝️ City codes are those unique aspects of a city that make it what it is. Without these, Amsterdam wouldn't be Amsterdam: if you removed the canals, if the people and buildings stopped being beautiful, if one day you didn't hear the birds singing.

🫂 Auditory

The audience includes expats, newcomers, and locals interested in history, as well as parents and kids. Knowledge, pictures, interactive elements, and sensory experiences can make waiting times more manageable.

🧽 Materials

Materials should showing the past, present, and future of the city and country. Colonial goods like coffee and spices are symbols of the past. Eco-friendly materials show that people here are smart and ethical toward future generations. Biotechnology materials show that the Netherlands is a scientific and developing country.

🧸 Future of Symbols

Redesign the classic symbols of Amsterdam using new, eco-friendly materials such as bioplastic, kombucha leather, mycelium, mushroom leather, and bacteria-dyed textiles.

Essence:

Amsterdammers are people who respect and reinterpret their past. They value their unique beauty and traditions, continuing to use items that their families have used for centuries. However, they also think about the ethics of these items, the future generations, and the environmental impact. They aim to preserve nature in their city. Amsterdam has always been like this. Innovative woodworking technologies in the 15th century brought rich to the country. Modern agricultural technologies now sustain the Dutch economy, and advanced climate protection technologies ensure that Amsterdammers can be confident about their future for the next 100 years.

Concept:

What if we combine the symbols of the past with this lifestyle? How can we show, through these city symbols, who Amsterdammers are today, what they think about, and how they live?

Project:

Recreate the iconic symbols of Amsterdam using new and environmentally friendly materials such a bioplastic, kombucha leather, mycelium, mushroom leather, bacteria-dyed textiles etc.

This project aims to illustrate the values of modern Amsterdammers: their respect for history, their ethical considerations, and their commitment to sustainability.

💡Ideas

👞Traditional clogs. Mycelium

This symbol is often seen at tourist locations in Amsterdam, but never on the feet of locals. However, they sometimes still have clogs at home – they wear them to walk around their garden, but of course, the shoes are uncomfortable for the street. Clogs are usually present in family homes, passed down through generations or have been in the house since childhood. It is worth noting that Amsterdam locals like to wear shoes that resemble clogs and this aesthetic doesn't bother them – Crocs or Swedish clogs, for example.

The soles of clogs are made from natural latex and textiles, and the mycelium. The upper part is made from kombucha leather and mushroom leather.

📨 Lot of letters. Mushroom paper

As soon as you arrive in Amsterdam, you'll be surprised by how many letters you receive. All communication with the government and banks is done through mail and real paper letters. Ideally, there wouldn't be any mail at all, like in more digitally advanced cities, but they still exist.

The letters will be made from a new material: mushrooms ADD TYPE OF MUSHROOM.

🥗 Nature: Lichens from symbolic places of Amsterdam: photos

Amsterdam is a very natural city. Nature in the city is essential for the health and safety of its residents: clean air, natural beauty, and water that can seep into the ground quickly without flooding the city. While any city may have trees and lawns, Amsterdam's care for greenery is exceptional. Wild plants are not mowed down here. People plant flowers and plants at their doorsteps, on balconies, and verandas. The city's landscaping efforts also ensure that every bit of land is greened. As a result, you can find not only huge old trees in the city but also tiny lichens that grow everywhere. Lichens are a bioindicator of the city's environmental situation; some types of lichens only grow in clean environments, while others can tolerate heavy pollution. There are cities where lichens are almost nonexistent, indicating severe urban pollution. In Amsterdam, lichens are found everywhere. This shows that the people who live here love their city very much, care about their health, and think about future generations.
